What The Ph...

OMFG I cannot believe these jerks. Are they running out of sorry topics on their variety show that they have to criticize the way Singaporeans speak English?! Sure, I know people have trouble understanding Singlish immediately and sometimes poke fun at how we speak it... it's common, no problem. But this bunch of Taiwanese who hardly speak English themselves... PUH-LEESE!!! One calls herself an English TEACHER! Who would want an English teacher who makes fun of how an entire nation speaks the language?!?

Oddly enough, they can't even point out the right mistakes! Not that I'm proud of it but some of us do say 'TANKS' instead of 'thanks'... who the hell ever say 'dance' - for your information, Singaporeans pronounce 'dance' as 'dunce'?!? Bloody'ell! If they jolly well made fun of our Mandarin, none of us would have anything to say. We'll surrender, no doubts about that. It's just aggravating to see these irresponsible people do this on their local tv show that Singaporeans watch religiously on cable on a language they don't speak well either!

Hey, at least we have an identity! They're just a bunch of Mainlanders who refuse to admit it.

I think it is a matter of the pot calling the kettle black. I do sincerely think that we speak better English than them. Of course pick the business or professional society apple for apple or let's pick a sales girl from a small town shop in Singapore and they pick one likewise and compare then. By the way, the small town sales girl probably is from China. Sigh! this is also the result of the Govt trying to switch our community from multi-language speaking to English then to Mandarin and all that.. Now with lots of 'overseas' influence (china, india, philippines, sri lanka, indonesia, malaysia, Europe, UK, USA, NZ,Aussie etc) we have come along way and our language is even in the dictionary. Singlish is unique. Thanks to the overseas influence, we are what we are. Then, I can be flexible and switch from top executive's lingo to chinatown INGRISH! Well.. I also have a good laugh from foreigners speaking English and I also I had an indonesian maid who spoke to another indonesian maid and the didnt understand one another. Same when I went to China, my teochew was somewhat different from their teochew. So people! grow up! We are in a Big World in Small Planet in Big Universe in our small brains. sincerely Chap Chye!

yes chap chye, you're absolutely right about us speaking better english... and also right about how we may speak singlish but when we're a different group of people, we can switch and speak proper english. that's why it's annoying to hear them say we speak 'guai' (weird) english!

"Dance"- when have we ever heard that! This is crazy!

too hilarious! Definitely a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

English is such a crazy language anyways and when you put all the accents on it- it just becomes a bit crazier- in Ghana I had to take an Indian lady to the clinic and translate for her- the doctor was from mainland china- the strange thing was BOTH spoke English- but I would have to translate (IN ENGLISH) after each one said what they said...it was like this:

Indian Lady: Speaks English
I: translate English to doctor
Doctor: Replies in English
I: translate English to Indian Lady

I'm still laughing remembering it!!
