Seriously, Do We Look Like Your Personal Shoppers!?

This has been a on-going ‘predicament’ for my friend, C, and I. After tens and hundreds of hours of non-stop screaming, bitching and tearing our hair out on the phone (it's amazing either of us still has a full head of hair!) asking each other ‘why us?!?!’, I’ve decided to blog about it. So if you’re one of these people who have asked either of us for such ‘favors’ and you’re not related to us, QUIT! We are busy enough… ok, SHE is busy enough and she certainly doesn't need help keeping her minutes of the days more occupied with three kids, a job, a husband, in-laws, parents, friends…. I don’t need to go on and you get the picture… and I don’t work because I don’t want to and if I like to idle my life away and wilt to nothing and mean absolutely nothing to anyone in this world, hey, that’s my prerogative! I like doing nothing and I like things to remain status quo. I don’t have a job for a reason so stop believing that you need to keep me busy!

Having lived in America for awhile now, we have come to realize that our Singaporean compatriots like to imagine our friendships, more often, acquaintanceships as something more than what there really is… we have long time school mates, class mates who barely tried to keep in contact in the last 20 years and once they realize we live in the U.S, it's like a light blub goes 'blink!' and they immediately think we’ve automatically signed up to be their personal shopping assistants. Yes, I’m absolutely serious!

A friend of mine whom I used to know in high school in Canada (she’s Singaporean) once dropped me an email out of the blues. This is what it said “need you to buy song from itunes for me asap – this is an emergency…” and continues to tell me the name of the song. HUH!? Who are you!? I’d heard from her maybe once or twice since high school and she wanted me to do her a favor with a note like that!? Yes, it's a 99 cent favor but it's not about the money! Of course I ignored it and haven’t heard from her since. Muahahaha!

Another time, this girl I went to school with in Singapore (in the early 80s) after a few instant messenger chats (in 2007!) decides that I should be her ‘BUYER’ for her business… ie, she tells me what to order, gets the order shipped to my home address and I send the products to her via the cheapest way of transportation. THEN she will reimburse me for postage (only). What!? You don't believe I really gave up that chance to be her 'buyer/shipper'?! IDIOT!

I have enough of a hard time shopping for my family and especially my little two nieces back home (out of my own free will, thank you very much), I don’t need uncalled stress from people I don’t care about. When I lived in Memphis, the post office was a short drive from me so I did do SOME people a few favors here and there but hello!??! I’m in Seattle now where going to the bloody store is a pain, much less the bloody post office! OMFG! Have a brain!! ...and what's in it for me to all of you these favors?!? No I don't want a bloody job much less one that pays absolutely nothing!

What about the one who bothers me about getting make-up for her girlfriend?! Make-up!? WAH LIAO!! Didn't you guys just return from a whirlwind trip from Australia?! Ohhh, you want the kiddy brands and the organic brands so you can think about starting your online cosmetic store... how about do your own homework and contact these people on your own instead of having me go search for it in different pockets of the city! Honestly! I just can't relate to how these people think!

C got an email today from a complete stranger… well, almost complete stranger. The only bond they have is that they went to the same high school (different graduating years however) but neither of them remember much about each other 'coz... well, they have never met! LOL! In his mail today, he wants her to buy some cellphone-cover. WHO CARES?!?!? Who the phuck do these people think they are?!?! ..and if they know how to email, can’t they learn to Google anything they want and use their own credit cards to buy them online!? Look, you live in Singapore – not Timbak-phucking-too! If they don’t have it in Singapore and you don’t have a GOOD friend / blood relative somewhere who would do you the favor, you don’t bloody hell need it. TRUST ME!!!!

No Singaporean Could Eat Them Under The Table?! :D

Come on Singaporeans! We're talking about satay here! Oohhh, I know why, no time to dip into that thick sweet and spicy peanut sauce... and what about the cucumbers, onions and kuetupat LOL! That's why! What's 500 sticks of satay to us!? :D Ok, need to stop, I'm salivating...

Takeru Kobayashi, 30, and Joey Chestnut, 24, the kings of competitive eating, met a a showdown at Robertson Walk during the inaugural Major League Eating (Asia) competition yesterday.

These two are best known for their record-setting appearances at the annual Nathan's Famous Hotdogs Eating Competition held in Coney Island, New York.

This year, Joey narrowly won the New York competition, breaking a rare tie to win with 64 hotdogs - just half a hotdog more than Takeru.

Joey also holds the world record for hotdog eating - 66 hotdogs in 12minutes. He won this title last year, ending Takeru's winning streak of six consecutive titles as the world champion of hotdog eating.

But in Singapore, it was a different story.

Takeru, nicknamed the Tsunami, chomped his way to an overwhelming victory over Joey.

Eating 51/2kg of chicken satay (nearly 275 sticks) in 12 minutes, Takeru managed to lick Joey (nicknamed The Jaws), who ate just over 4kg (200 sticks) in the same time.

From the moment the clock started ticking, it was clear why they were the best at their game.

They grabbed the satay with their hands and stuffed the food into their mouths, and the lead quickly went to Takeru, who finished his first kilogram of satay by the second minute. He then went on to claim an easy victory.

Familiarity of the food involved could have been an advantage to Takeru.

He said: 'Chicken satay is very similar in taste to yakitori (Japanese skewered chicken).'

DIFFERENT TASTE

In contrast, Joey found that the taste of our satay was very different from the ones he had back in California while preparing for the competition.

He said: 'The ones in the competition had a lot more flavour than those back home.

'It was like a combination of sweetness and saltiness, and for a moment, when I opened the box I was overwhelmed by the smell.'

Techniques made a difference as well for the two.

Takeru admitted that chewing was Joey's forte - which was why he preferred to use another method.

He said: 'It was my technique against his (Joey's). I knew that if I competed against him in chewing I would lose, because Joey has stronger jaws.'

For that reason, he took to drinking more water to swallow the satay faster, tossing his head back after every gulp of water and bite of satay.

Joey was disappointed that he had lost, but he was still optimistic about future competitions.

He said 'We're scheduled to compete again at a hamburger eating competition in the United States in September.

'I'm really always excited to be competing against him, because he makes me work and push my limits to the maximum.'

The competition was the closing event to this year's Singapore Food Festival.

It was organised by local media company Thinkin' Tub, who owns the Major League Eating (Asia) franchise, in conjunction with the Singapore Tourism Board

Excuse Me Are You Filipino?

I've been in Seattle now for more than seven months. Seven months have gone by peacefully with nobody asking much else other than for directions, my order or whatever service I'm at a particular place for. No questions about my 'ethnicity' at all...

Funny thing 'coz I was just thinking of my origins this morning... with Singapore's National Day coming up next month and me planning - more like thinking of planning - an 'event' - for the Singaporeans around here to get-together. ANYWAYZ, before I go off on a tangent... I went to the spa this morning to get a facial and massage and the girl who gave me the facial asked at the end of her service, 'are you filipino?', I smiled - since it was only the first time in so many months, asking me that oh-so-familiar question. I felt I HAD to be kind and even took out the time to explain that I'm not from the Phillipines but many people - usually Filipinos themselves - make the same mistake. She told me she's half-caste; which I would have had no idea as she's very Caucasian. Yes, very pink :) So I'm chuckling my way out of Nordstrom across the street to Pacific Place to my hair salon to meet my new hair lady, Cher - I kid you not - Cher :) Cher is openly lesbian and is an awesome hairstylist! ...and one of the first ten questions she asks; 'are you Filipino?!? - AFTER she tells me I have a beautiful face (but not body of course LOL). Again, this time, a little more abrupt 'nope!' but still with a sweet smile. But she was nice and was keen on finding out about Singaporeans, Singapore (no it's NOT in China) and bombarded me with her curiousity, which was a breath of fresh air coming from the people I was surrounded by 'previously' :D

No, of course there is nothing wrong being Filipino but you know, it gets old very quickly when you go through life having people come up to you all the time, no matter where you go in this world, ask you the same question. I will admit to the time it came into use when the valet in Vienna assumed I was Filipino... but other than that, guys at airports, guys at bus-stops... women at grocery stores, restaurants... nah, I don't care to answer that question again and again, day after day. It's become quite the joke for the husband when he sees Filipinos walk across a room towards me because he knows exactly what they're about to ask me. What's worst, when I tell people I'm Chinese, they doubt me and want me to prove it LOL! WTF?!?!

Where Have I Been?!

Nowhere lol!

It can't get any cooler in this country at this time of the year so I'm trying to enjoy the less warm weather in Seattle. But... 'I hate summer days!'; and I don't care how mild it is, I want cooler, better yet, cold weather everyday - especially when I'm gallivanting around the streets, sweltering in sweat pouring down the crevaces of my layers of fatty skin. Yuk! Double yuk! So with this 'beautiful' weather that's chanced upon Seattle for a good three weeks now, no clouds, no rain, just pure clear days of sunshine, I haven't exactly been doing much. However, I'm still ecstatic to be here 'coz thus far, the high has only gotten to as high as 86 degrees farenheit (arrgh!) while it's at least 10 degrees if not more where our house sits in Tennessee!

I shall be back soon. More often... I know I've probably lost some of my readers but you'll come back :)
