Cooking @ Home (Tuna Curry Puffs)

I've been cooking a lot in the last couple of days after almost a week of being lazy and uninspired. ...but even eating good food out gets a little tiring; and I find myself back in the kitchen but a little more inspired to make new dishes :)

Today, I decided to make use of the four cans of Ayam brand tuna curry that my friend Connie so generously shared with me to make tuna curry puffs. I know, it sounds nasty to some of you - and I was a little apprehensive myself lol!! When I told the king what I was going to make, the man literally ran out of the door lol. Yes, he was going to work too but the thought of tuna curry puff just seemed awful to him.

So I got some fresh hot peppers (chilli), shallots and garlic, grounded then together then fried them in oil to bring out the flavor of all three ingredients. Added the four cans of tuna curry, some Thai chilli paste which also added some sweetness to it (instead of sugar) and a bunch of thinly sliced onions. Voila - below the end product.

I used store-bought puff pastry and and a couple of hours later...

They're pretty tasty... and yes, when the husband got home, he ate six mini tuna curry puffs (not the above sized ones as they are medium sized) with beer with no complaints hee hee.

I Love Facebook!

Even though they're making us use the new version of Facebook (fb) without choice very soon; and I don't love it, I still think the concept of fb is simply awesome. I don't know what is it with myspace that didn't stick with me (maybe too many adds and too many sleaze-balls lol) but no complaints from my end!

This past week alone, I've found a classmate who went to school with me when we were just twelve years old. Ok, not just any classmate but we were in the same classroom for that entire year! Yes, she sat towards the back of the class and I, of course, being the diminutive 4'10 3/4" sat right smack in front where I mastered the art of avoiding each teacher's flying saliva. Ewww! I could not remember her at first... then less then 24 hours later, in the shower no doubt, I had a eureka moment and went 'of course!!!'. I not only remembered who she was, I remember what she looked like and I think I even remember her parents, for some odd reason. Now, she's a mother of two, a biologist and hot damn(!), living in Vancouver, Canada! We're planning to meet up when she and her family heads over here in November... how cool is that?! :)

Then the amazing 'people you might know' pointed out a person whose name seemed awfully familiar. I thought for awhile, sent him a note and voila(!), it's my neighbor from when we were barely teenagers! Now, he too, is a father of two and living in Los Angeles :) Funny thing, I just found out from checking out his fb page, that we know a bunch of people in common, not the least, a friend in Seattle too! What a small world :D

I can't imagine who else I'm going to find and vice versa. No crazy psycho ex-boyfriends I hope but I didn't know that many of those other than the stalker I put in jail; so I think I'm pretty safe lol!

Smile! For Goodness Sakes!

I just 'met' the most unfriendly, unsmiley person I've ever come across since the time I started taking elevators lol. Ok, that might be overstating it a little but... what is wrong with people who don't smile?! I'm not asking you to smile so much people think you're the insane bum at the corner of the street... but for crying out loud, what's so difficult about cracking a friggin' smile?! Even a one reluctant one sided crooked smile when someone, a stranger maybe, smiles at you out of being polite and... nice maybe?! This guy just looked pissed off at the world. At the world, at himself... just not a happy camper.

I couldn't wait to get out of the lift. But of course, it stopped at the 5th floor where a poor couple was trying to get their Ikea shopping into the elevator on a trolley. I smiled at the lady... looked across at the guy. Nothing. So it wasn't just me he didn't want to smile at... The man outside said to himself 'I think we might be able to fit'... nothing from the guy and I hurried a 'yeah come this angle...'. They didn't come at my angle but went towards the angry man lol! Nope - DUH! Next elevator... still nothing from the man. Oh, he's Filipino I think... Asian for sure. Maybe he thought I was also Feelo (that's what the Filipinas in Melbourne call each other), I don't know...

"Ding! Seventeenth floor". I couldn't get out of the bloody elevator fast enough. Gawd I hope I never see that guy again. He lives on the 22nd storey.

Hanging Out With Mainlanders

Yes I'm Chinese... and to the mainland Chinese, I'm a foreign Chinese. I speak broken Chinese (not with a beautiful Beijing sing-song accent like most of them do) and I can't seem to complete full sentence without substituting some English words in it. It's sad but true. However, Mandarin is my second language, so cut me some slack already!

Yesterday, for the first time in my life, I hung out with my friend, Amy, who is the owner of the local foot massage place. It was lunch with a couple of our Japanese friends, and then followed by shopping with Amy and Nancy, both from China. I don't think my ears have spent that much time trying to concentrate so hard just to comprehend Mandarin ; I mean, I speak Mandarin to my mom growing up and even though I live far far away from my family, my daily phone conversations with mom doesn't allow me, like some other phony compatriots from Singapore to say 'oh I can no more speak Mandarin'. That's utter nonsense anyway!

But yes, hanging out with a bunch of Mainlanders is quite unlike hanging out my Singaporean friends who speak mainly Chinese. For me, it was more like being in a Chinese musical... no, opera... with them singing their replies and comments to me in words I don't normally come across LOL! Funny - but stressful lol.

These people work so hard... I mean, massaging other people's feet is no joke (hell my husband doesn't even enjoy doing it for me - ok, not exactly a romantic move I'll admit) but to do it on a more-than-twelve-hour-day-job... ouch! But watching them spend money was pretty impressive! I mean, I'm a pretty big spender (at times) but I guess I never expected people who work so hard manually to burn money like... ummmm... me? HAHAHA! ...and these people expect big name brands...! If you think just because a lot of the imitation stuff comes from China and they are the main recipients, you're bloody wrong!! They expect to shop at Saks, Neiman Marcus... they buy kid's clothing at Oilily, Chloe... can you say ka-ching!?! :D

I needed help removing the toothpicks out of my eyes so I could go to sleep last night. Talk about an eye-opener lol.

FFY Dinner

Yesterday was one of those slow, low energy Sundays and by 8:30pm, we were still on each of our computers without a dinner plan. I was too lazy to cook and we weren't hungry enough to want to get dressed to go out... so we decided on a ffyd night aka fend for yourself dinner night :D

The king had put his frozen pizza and voila(!) dinner. I just wasn't in a pizza mood, much less a frozen one. Instead, I put together one of my quick meals that scared the hell out of the husband and made him want to run far away from me lol. I opened a can of sardines (mmmm, mmmm mmmm saarh-deeeens!), topped it up with fresh chilli in fish sauce (fish sauce drained), rough sliced onions (I LOVE my onions) and a couple slices of toast. I also made toast with a thin layer of butter and marmite... YUM! Fancy ffyd for me :D These were things my dad and I loved eating for breakfast/snacks some days together. Food like that makes me miss my dad... ok, a lot of food makes me miss my dad ;) He's definitely the guy who gives me and my mini-me three year old niece, our appetites lol!

It's Labor Day Monday... no more ffy meals... it's back to the kitchen as a good wife :)
