Rest In Peace Darwin

I was merely being a busy body... Tammy had written an inquisitive note on her brother's facebook page... I was puzzled. I went into Darwin's page and read a few more notes on his wall from friends. HUH!? Didn't sound right. I didn't understand... I thought he was on some world wind vacation thing? He just added me as a friend on April 15!?! We went to high school in Toronto together... the shy but sweet boy who turned into a man but hasn't changed much in the recent photos are apparent...

We lost Darwin... rest in peace. You're in all your friends' thoughts. Even the old ones, like me, who have lost contact but will always remember you...

(News) Wakeboarder dies after falling into sea

TRAGEDY OFF PUNGGOL
Wakeboarder dies after falling into sea
Divemaster, 35, foams at the mouth
Heart stops beating soon after

HE loved the sea.

And in a twist of fate, he died while he was out at sea.

Mr Darwin Peh, 35, was wakeboarding with a group of friends near Pulau Seletar off Punggol on Sunday afternoon when he suddenly fell into the water.

The New Paper understands that he was foaming around his mouth when his friends pulled him out of the water.

When they could not revive him, they placed him in recovery position - on his side - and rushed back to shore.

It is understood that Mr Peh's heart had already stopped beating before they reached the mainland.

Someone called for an ambulance and Mr Peh got to Changi General Hospital at about 2.30pm.

Doctors pronounced him dead soon after.

Police have classified the case as unnatural death and investigations are ongoing.

Mr Peh was cremated yesterday and this morning, his family and friends will gather for a ceremony to scatter his ashes into the sea in a final send-off.

'He really loved the sea,' said one of his friends who declined to be named.

Mr Peh, who has a girlfriend, is a divemaster with Waikiki Dive Centre.

He runs his own public relations and branding company.

The New Paper understands that he wakeboards regularly with Ponggol Sea Sports Acccessories - which operates wakeboarding courses and clinics.

When contacted, the operator declined to comment about the incident.

Pro-wakeboarder and instructor Kevin Tan, who used to represent Singapore in international competitions and has been involved in the sport for over 10 years, said: 'So far, there has not been any such incidents.'

As far as he knows, this is the first time someone has died wakeboarding here, he said.

The sport, which is a cross between waterskiing and surfing, has been around for over 15 years but started getting popular here only in the last 10 years.

Wakeboarders use the wake created by the boat as a ramp to propel themselves into the air, perform a series of manoeuvres, then land on the other side of the wake.

One of Mr Peh's relatives said that he enjoyed all kinds of sports.

He went mountain climbing and jogged regularly.

It is understood that he even trekked up K2 - which is known to be the world's second-highest mountain in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan range - last year.

Said the relative who declined to be named: 'Darwin was a good man, and he lived a meaningful life.

'He was very active and sporty.'

When The New Paper visited his home at Chiltern Drive, off Braddell Road, his mother shook her head when asked if he had any medical conditions.

She declined to say more, except: 'We're very sad.'

On the online networking site, Facebook, one of his dive buddies and close friend posted an album, entitled 'In loving memory of our dearest friend Darwin'.

It contained photographs of their dive trip in Thailand's Ko Lanta last December.

One of his friends, who has been on dive trips with him, said: 'He was very cheerful and very sweet.

'It's very difficult for us to believe he's gone.'

Why Is It Always About Race

The king and I attended a showing of a Singapore movie at the Seattle Film Festival (SIFF) on Friday evening. It would be my first time at a SIFF event as well as my first at a Malay movie. The movie contained English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay but it was predominantly Malay spoken, quite concentrated around the Muslim religion, death and the rather non-communication throughout Singaporean families and a selfish nation as a whole.

'Salawati' - also the name of the twelve year old actress in the movie - wasn't exactly my type of film. I knew this before I went to see it. But seeing that it was a movie made in Singapore about Singaporeans (even though not made by a true blue Singaporean at least the American now lives in Singapore), I couldn't miss it.

The main storyline was pretty simple. Malay girl witnesses the death of her brother who drowns at sea after not being helped by a passer-by. It is not clear if the boy would have lived even if the passer-by had helped since the second man (an Indian) who helped came right after the first one (a Chinese man) who ignored the pleas of Salawati.

There was a question-and-answer session after the almost 90 min movie (yes it was rather s-l-o-w for my liking) as the director, Micheal X Grigaroff had flown in from Singapore for the filming of his show. Only half of the already very sparse audience stayed for this session and it made me chuckle that the small audience of mostly Caucasians were so inquisitive and impressed with the actors - especially the girl who played Salawati (a first time actor, apparently), the theme behind it (which was an odd question to me) and the inspiration that brought upon the making of the movie. One such question that struck me as odd and bothersome was one of the last couple of questions of whether the first person (the Chinese man) who refused to help the the little girl knew this girl was Malay; ie, was he able to tell the difference in race? ...and if that was the reason why he didn't help the girl. WOW! That boggled my mind! Sure it's not exactly anything to be proud of that I know Singaporeans (I, myself, included) are generally pretty selfish people. A lot of us are taught as kids to mind our own business. "Aiyah, dun care lah - just myob (mind your own business)!" or "why do you have to be so kaypo/kpo (busybody in our lingo)" or "cover your own ass first before you want to go kpo'ing around other people's business ok!?". So when the American asked the question about whether the Chinese man would have helped the little Malay girl if she had been Chinese struck a chord in me. Funny, it was practically insulting to say this fictitious character was not just selfish but a racist! Not to say Singaporeans are not racist, but we're not actually taught nor built to think about race before anything. An afterthought... maybe... but I can safely say if the little girl was Chinese, and a selfish (and racist) Chinese guy had walked by, he wouldn't have helped her either. Sad, but true...

The King's Birthday In Junuary

It's June but it's nice and cool (sometimes downright cold - definitely still sweater weather which I love!). It's a good 35 degrees cooler here then it is in Memphis! Guess who's happy about that?! :D I suppose once the the rain ends there, we have to return to get the yard sorted out. We've also decided against selling the house... so ummm... we can still go to Memphis to 'play' and see people we like - albeit, not that many :) I'm sure the husband's gonna' deny it but I know the truth lol!

It was the king's birthday over the weekend and we had a nice fun filled two full days. From dim sum with Eric and Julie to foot massages at the Imperial Foot Massage in Chinatown, to trivia night at Shultzy's (that ended up with a dance off lol - we came in a close third, thankfully, so we didn't have to join in the dancing phew! It was a slow night for my brain (no comments on that statement please!)... considering the most exciting parts for me were two questions fit for Einstein: "what was the name of the bad guy in the Smurfs?", and completing the lyrics to a Boys 2 Men song lol! I suppose two points is better then nothing lol)... to lunch at Lao Shi Chuan to doing some lightweight house-hunting to happy hour with Don and Susan and ending the evening with home made Turkish meatball sandwiches.

It's been two weeks since the car's gone to the shop and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it returns today! The husband got it slightly busted up when he drove out of the garage and got a little too close to the huge ass pillar... it's been a little painful without a car but we've been renting a car on weekends and a couple of friends have been nice enough to come pick me up to go out... so I can't complain too much.

I'm not looking forward for the warm weather to get here... but I will say this: while it can get pretty muggy here, it can't get worst then Memphis - that, I'm thrilled about :)
